The Best Historic European Hotel

Friday, January 27th, 2012

At one time France’s main tourist’s sights were in Paris and the Riviera where very few holiday makers explored the rest of the country. Now times have changed, though the Mediterranean resorts are still the most popular tourist’s destination. Holiday makers have become aware of how much the rest of France has to offer. There are many historical buildings in France which have been converted to hotels. These hotels can beat any European hotel with their standard and amenities.

This will make you realize that any journey in France can be a cultural journey. The way these historical buildings have been restored and managed is an art by itself. They have fully merged with the landscape and you can make your stay in France more interesting by having a memorable experience. So you should not limit your horizon either to a particular region or to a particular field of interest.

Trianon Palace & Spa in the Versailles in France is a place restored to make top class hotel.

It is the building through which Louis XIV nearly bankrupted France during the construction. The hotel overlooking gardens is a spectacular sight. You will be humbled to note that in 1919, the Versailles Peace Treaty was ratified by delegates who stayed in the same rooms that house guests today. The plush and elegant hotel has its own spa. It is one of the finest historical hotels in Europe.

To stay in a Chateau is an experience by itself. Not many people have this experience, but you can have it when you stay in Chateau de Locguenole in Hennebont in the Brittany region. The collection of furnishings and artifacts cannot be collected by any decorator. It is a Breton manor house being occupied by the same family for 500 years.

You will have to stay there to understand why it is the most charming hotel in southern Brittany.

One of the best historical hotels in France is Manoir du Stang in La Foret-Fouesnant of the Brittany region. It has ivy that twines across the facade of the16th century Breton manor house. There are formal gardens which merge into forested parkland. They have together of modern amenities with antiques which is an art by itself. It is a glamorous hotel.

Château de Rochegude in the Rochegude region in Provence has existed for thousand years. The restored rooms are outfitted in a style inspired by a specific emperor or king. It is set in 10 hectares of parkland adjacent to the Rhone just on the outskirts of Orange.

Château de la Vallée Bleue in the La Chatre of the Massif Central region has rooms named for Liszt, Chopin, Flaubert, or Delacroix. In all probability they slept in the same room. Château des Alpilles in the St-Remy-de-Provence of Provence has been owned by the Pichot family in 1827. It has been host to many famous persons like Chateaubriand. This European hotel also known as “a house for paying friends,” is famous for its luxury, refinement, and taste.

Planning a Northern European Cruise

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

When you first begin planning your Northern European Cruise you may well be confused with the wide variety of options available. Northern Europe has a wide selection of different countries to visit and ensuring you take in the sights you want can become a major excerise in planning.

Our handy introduction to the various countries available should serve as an introduction allowing you to plan your cruise with confidence.

France

Northern France borders the English channel and has many small towns and villages dotted along the coast of Normandy. A cruise in this area may well take in the Channel Islands including Jersey and Guernsey which although British have a vastly different climate to mainland Britain. The capital of France is Paris which is located a couple of hours south of the coast so a visit will require a little organisation.

Britain

On the opposite side of the English Channel you may well begin your cruise at the large port of Southampton.

The Isle of Wight is a potential venue for a stop over as are the Channel Islands. The capital of Britain is London which is approximately one hour north of the south coast.

Denmark and the Netherlands

If you plan to stop in the Netherlands you can find a wealth of culture in the city of Amsterdam or the lowlands of Belgium. Amsterdam is the capital of Holland and is an easy stopover point for your cruise as it’s a port city. Denmark is located at the entrance to the Baltic Sea and is classed as a Scandanavian country. The capital of Denmark is Copenhagen which has a rich culture.

Norway

A cruise around Norway can take in the delights of the Norweigien Ffjords and takes you northwards into the artic waters of the northern hemisphere.

Pack your heavy clothes for the weather turns much colder but it can be worth it for a view of the Northern Lights.

Sweden

Sweden is the next country you’ll find come across in the Baltic Sea. The capital of Sweden is Stockholm and it has strong ties with its proximity to Denmark. Sweden has strong Scandanaivian links and is full of the history of the Vikings.

Finland

Moving further into the Baltic Sea you reach the country of Finland and its capital Helsinki which is located on the southern coast. Being a port city Helsinki is an ideal stop for your cruise and is filled with a wealth of Scandanavian culture and history.

Germany

A cruise along the northern coast of Germany takes in delightful cities such as Bremerhaven and Rostock. You’ll no doubt look to travel inland slightly to Hamburg which spans the River Elbe and if you have the time arrange a trip further inland to Berlin, one of Europe’s most historic and vibrant cities.

Poland

Stop off in Poland in the Baltic Sea at the city of Gdansk and take in a thriving culture of this former eastern european state.

Russia

Coming towards the end of the Baltic Sea you reach the western coast of Russia and a visit to the beautiful city of St Petersburg. Steeped in history and culture St Petersburg has strong links to the Tsars who once ruled Russia and made the city their capital. There’s a vast wealth of museums and history to explore in St Petersburg including the old palace that ensure a visit is well worth your time.
