European Christmas Markets

Friday, October 28th, 2011

You could argue all day about where to find the best European Christmas Markets. These markets are a distinctly German tradition, but they have spread across Europe.

If you’re used to shopping in big malls after fighting for a parking spot, these will be a whole new shopping world for you…. They might just be worth a winter trip.

There are great Christmas markets across the continent. Some have been around since the middle ages… some have only recently become traditions. Even the newer Christmas Markets in Europe are fun to see. They’ve taken lessons from the older ones.

At the biggest European Christmas markets, you’ll see lots of Christmas cheer…. There will be many traditional Christmas decorations to buy from the area you’re visiting and lots of local food. The shopping is for handmade ornaments, decorations, and children’s toys.

The bigger cities may be easier to plan for, but don’t neglect the smaller towns.

While the markets in the major cities may be among the best, keep in mind that bigger isn’t always better… and the bigger European Christmas markets may be more crowded.

Choose a city that you would like to see anyway. Maybe visit a big city and a small town nearby to get both experiences. Remember, it’s going to be cold… White Christmas anyone? You’re also going to run into short days, so it will be dark early, but the Christmas lights on the stalls in the squares will make it all festive and be fun.

Visit any of the great German Christmas markets… Cologne, Nuremberg, Dresden, Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart, or any of the smaller towns.

Other countries with Germanic connections have great markets too. In Austria, Vienna has had a market since the middle ages… some say it was the forerunner of the others. Salzburg also has one of the oldest. It’s smaller and more intimate than some, but what a romantic setting.

In Belgium, the Brussels Christmas market hasn’t been around all that long, but the Grand Place has been, and it makes a great setting. Look for the Fish Market transformed into an ice rink and lots of good food with the traditional arts and crafts.

In Denmark, Copenhagen’s Christmas Market is set up in Tivoli Gardens, Europe’s oldest amusement park, so you know you can expect a good time.

The Czech Republic has a beautiful market in Prague. It’s a low key family affair. Look for good deals on Bohemian crystal as well as the wood carved puppets, toys and ornaments.

Tallinn, Estonia has one of the newcomers to the Christmas Market scene, but the mediaeval market square doesn’t give that fact away. It’s small but romantic. Hand knit sweaters, scarves and hats are specialties to look for here.

There is lots of Christmas cheer around London, but even here you can find a German-style Christmas market in Hyde Park.

Strasbourg’s borders have changed several times through the centuries from France to Germany and back, so a Germanic style Christmas market has been a tradition here for over four hundred years.

In Rome, look for a totally different Christmas market experience with more traditional Italian handicrafts and lots of nativity scenes.

Winter is usually the off season for European travel, but you’d better book ahead for the most popular Christmas Markets. For better prices on airfare, avoid peak Christmas travel dates. Markets go from late-November through Christmas. (Advent on the Christian calendar – the four weeks before Christmas.) Some extend the festivities to the new year.

Never thought about this kind of holiday? This is one of the most picturesque times of the year in some ways. It might be worth checking out European Christmas markets.

Advantages to Train Travel for Travel in Europe

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Article by Glen Wheaton

Should you be coming to Europe from North America, you will have to rethink everything you recognize concerning train travel. As Europe is more condensed population-wise, and they have a longer history of rail travel, there are numerous advantages to train travel in Europe as opposed to air or highway moving. For convenience, cost-effectiveness, and environmental efficiency, while considering your mode of Europe travel, train travel to Europe is a great preference.

Convenience. Compared with train travel in North America, Europe’s trains are faster, more prompt, and with a rail network of more than 100,000 miles has the ability to service other diverse areas. We have found while going to Paris from London we save a lot of time on Eurostar, as the trip from St. Pancreas to Gare du Nord requires roughly two hours, fifteen minutes and operate more-or-less hourly. But the time savings on either end of the journey is where you actually make up the time. Just about all airports in Europe are located rather a long way from the city centers, but train stations are near or in the centers of city, where it is possible to simply and quickly link to the handy metro transport systems. Plus going through airport security is much more time consuming than rail security. Generally speaking, 400 miles may be considered the cut-off distance when air travel is overall the faster alternative, depending of course on many variables.

More energy efficient. When transporting like numbers of individuals, rail travel is five times more efficient than traveling by automobile, and European trains use seventeen times less fuel than airplanes, so from an energy conservation standpoint European train travel is much more efficient. Another advantage to train travel to Europe is they infrequently endure weather delays.

Cost-effective. If you have a well thought out schedule and reserve ahead of time, the cost savings can be vast. For example, if you were to book a one-way train from Paris to Venice, leaving at around 8:30 PM, you’d reach your destination in Venice about 9:30 the next morning within a short walk to St. Mark’s Square, which is the center of Venice. Reserving for one adult three months in advance, the price was around , but reserving only one week ahead of time nearly tripled the outlay. You can book ninety days in advance, therefore if it is possible to stay within that time frame you won’t need to contend with trains being sold-out. Back to the appealing thought of overnight travel possibilities, parting Paris a little prior to seven in the evening, you could pull in the next morning in Bologna at 6 AM, Florence at 7:16 or Rome at 10:12 AM and avoid the purchase price of one night’s hotel price. We have found that making reservations with connections in France we use RailEurope, as their pricing is equivalent to others, and you will discover bargains on their internet site, which is much uncomplicated to navigate.

Specialty trains. They are not cost-efficient, but for romance and glamour there are still alternatives that bring the tourist back to some bygone era. The Trans-Siberian Railway, perhaps the most famous rail journey in the world, links Moscow with Beijing in about six days, traversing the huge wooded wilderness of Siberia and also the sands of the Gobi desert, or join up with a number of other East Asian destinations. The Bernina Express is the highest rail crossing of the Alps, and takes you from glaciers to palm trees in two hours. Next there is the famed Orient Express, but it can be said only remnants of this celebrated old line exists. The Venice Simplon Orient Express could be considered one of these running from London to Venice and other European locations.

For efficiently using train travel to Europe, as many long distance traveler trains operate on lines employed by other services and do not always have first priority, there may be some delays in connections. Additionally, particularly in Western Europe you will want to purchase your tickets well ahead of time or pay the price on substantially higher rates. But hopefully you’ll feel comfortable with using train travel for your transportation throughout Europe.

European Travel Safety

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Traveling abroad is a fun and exciting endeavor that many are fortunate to experience.  International travel can also be a little daunting as unfamiliar places can make people very uncomfortable and feel at risk to their surroundings.  Travel is supposed to be fun and can be if you do your homework and stay aware of some basic travel tips.

The first thing to prepare for a trip abroad is to purchase travel insurance.  This will protect against any lost or damaged luggage, trip cancelation protection, death and bereavement protection as well as medical insurance and medical evacuation protection while abroad.  Always spend the extra -50 extra to make sure that all of your traveling party is insured.

Once everybody in your traveling party is insured, make sure that proper protection is taken against all important documentation.  This includes all passports, driver licenses, airline ticket information, hotel documents and any other travel related documents are secured throughout your trip.  Utilize any hotel or hostel safe that is provided.  Place your passport, any travel visas you may have and other documentation inside the safe at the hotel to insure its protection.

Carry a photocopy of your passport on your person at all times in case you need to identify yourself.  Never carry your original passport on you.  Make a few copies of your travel itinerary and any travel plans you have; leave a copy with the hotel lobby receptionist as well as a copy with a few friends and family back home so they know your travel intentions.  Check in with these friends and family each day and let them that everything its going alright and going well.

While traveling and throughout your vacation, make sure that your luggage is always protected and everything inside is safe.  If your luggage allows, place a padlock on each zipper to lock up each compartment.  Even keep your luggage locked while it is inside your locked hotel room, so as to not tempt any underpaid maid staff.  While traveling in airports, bus and rail stations keep your luggage in front of you at all times and never leave it unattended.

Another good safety measure to take for your luggage is to make your luggage uniquely yours.  You can do this by tying ribbons to the zippers, placing stickers and patches on each piece or by even making random paint markings on the luggage so that you know that it is yours.  This becomes very convenient when trying to find your belongings at the baggage claim area.  Unique luggage can deter would be thieves as they will stand out amongst the other suitcases and travel equipment.

When it comes to traveling with money, its best to try to not carry large bills, and if possible, utilize travelers checks and credit cards as these create a paper trail if something were to happen.  If carrying cash, don’t carry all your cash in one pocket.  Distribute it throughout your body and use multiple pockets.  If you use a wallet, don’t carry it in a back pocket where it is easily accessible by thieves and remove any sensitive information from your wallet such as you or your traveling companion’s contact information, any phone numbers and other information you wouldn’t want a thief to have access to.

When traveling abroad, make sure that you do all you can to try and not stand out as a tourist.  Avoid having your head buried in a map in public places, displaying large sums of cash and wearing expensive jewelry.  All of those things will make you an easy target for muggers.  It is essential to know all local emergency numbers as well as the number to your local embassy.

Travel safety is all about common sense but doing your homework will pay off in the end to ensure safe travels.  Keeping up your guard and having an eye for the unusual will help keep everyone safe and enable everyone to enjoy your trip to Europe!

CRIME PREVENTION WHILE TRAVELING

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

Safety and security are always a concern when you travel. Everyday, travelers venture into large metropolitan cities both domestic and international. No matter where travelers go, they will end up in locations where street crime exists. It is even more prevalent in countries where unemployment, poverty, and overpopulation exist. In some countries, a traveler’s watch can equal a few months salary. Often criminals specifically target travelers if they are women, or because if they carry an expensive equipment, and will often not return to prosecute if the criminal is caught.

A person who travels alone, most likely turns to be a victim of the petty crime. Person travelling alone faces more risks when compared to a person travelling with someone or groups. All over the world, we could see travelers facing crimes. We cannot just say that, travelers are targeted only for their jewels or a lump sum of money. Petty crimes take place even for a penny. The most stolen items are cash, jewels, credit cards, mobile phones, cameras, passports and even sometimes your wardrobes. Criminals are wiser than us. At times, a petty crime may end up in losing lives too. So, it is advisable to travel in groups rather than traveling alone. Though losing our money or other belongings may be a great loss losing a passport is worse. While travelling to countries abroad, passport plays a major role to depict our identity.  So, passports have to be kept very safe from getting into the hands of the criminals.

One of the best ways to prevent crime is to visit your own government’s international travel safety information and warnings website. You’ll find up-to-date travel information, details on potential safety issues ranging from pickpocketing to terrorism, even weather warnings. Gather knowledge about latest travel warnings and be alert of your surroundings during your trip. If you are concerned about the safety situation, avoid border cities and unpopulated areas.

When traveling with children, teach them to tell your name, house address and contact numbers, which will be very useful if they get lost or get into the hands of the strangers. But advise them not to pass on this information to casual enquirers or over phone. Don’t leave them alone in crowded places. For toddlers who are yet to communicate clearly, tie an identity tag or card.

In many big cities, you may be approached by strangers asking you your place, your details and so on.  Unfortunately, when you travel alone you have to be wary of people and trusting someone you have just met is a risky business.  You have to remember that <personal safety </a> is a must.

Finally, the important thing is that, travelers should be bold enough to report to the cops, when they are affected by criminals. In many popular destinations, you could find tourist police who can help you. Don’t get panic in disastrous situations. Traveling not only involves handling risky situations, but also contains lot of delightful experiences.

If you are planning to go abroad on a vacation, or to take a expedition or travel inside your own country, take safety advice that a provide us to avoid probable dangerous or unpleasant situations in travel; the tips given may be useful especially for beginner tourists.

Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsunday islands has a reputation for being a great place to party, in between sailing trips to the islands. Another must stop location on the backpacker migration up north. Had a ball in Airlie, went out on a boat yesterday to snorkel the reef. The colours of the coral and the diversity of the fish life just blew me away. Thanks to Jetstream for the trip. Also checked out the Barefoot Bushmans Wildlife Park where you can see a variety of Aussie wildlife including a great crocodile show. Tomorrow I go out on a 54 foot Classic Schooner, the Atlanta , for a morning cruise before heading off to Magnetic Island. It’s a hard life….. In Airlie I decided that given it is such a big location for back packers, instead of interviewing an Aussie local, I would interview a back packer working at Airlie. Travel Wrap for Travelling

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

The words travel wrap, to me give me the feeling of warmth, snuggling down with a good book or a mug of hot chocolate.  It says a warm blanket, folded at the end of the sofa ready to wrap you up on a cold winter’s night, or a shawl you can wrap round your shoulders.

But of course a travel wrap is not really for home it’sis really for travelling, whether it be a car blanket that you keep in the boot for emergencies, or a shawl you use on a long train journey, or a kids blanket to help the children to sleep on a long flight.

A wrap or travel blanket for the car is great to keep in the boot all the time, it can be used as a picnic blanket if you have not packed one, or if you are on a long journey and the passengers want to sleep, a rug to keep them warm.  They are also fantastic for emergencies in the cold weather, if you break down or get stuck in snow, they can be essential, especially if you cannot use the car heater.

A travel wrap can simply be a really wide scarf or pashmina that you can wear on the journey but you could also can stretch out over you or wrap it around your shoulders on the train or plane.

A wrap can also be a really great solution for travelling with kids, they often get cold if they are young and can’t yet walk and if they are still sleeping in the day, so a blanket that you can have with you all the time in the buggy or car seat is a really good idea, you can take is out when you get on the train or plane and use it on the journey as well as travelling to the station or airport.

These days you can get travel wraps for kids that are shaped and fit into a seat and have holes in to allow the straps through.  They can be left in the car seat or buggy all the time so you always have it with you if you need it.  They can be wrapped or unwrapped, which is great for travelling when often the temperatures change dramatically as you move in and outside, air conditioning, cars in cold weather before they warm up.  It also means if the child is sleeping you can wrap and unwrap them as often as you like without waking them up.

It is always worth having a travel wrap, or something that can be used while travelling.  They can have so many uses and be left in the car or buggy so you always have it with you.  Make sure you get one that is useful to you and that you can keep especially for travelling.

I have children myself and I write about products and tips which are useful to parents, they cover making life less fuss and more fun, saving time and getting out and about with young babies and children.  Some of my articles are interesting but they try to have a bit of fun and laughter about them.

2

Now with the popularity of online travel websites and with the presence of all those agents on online platform, those fears of unethical deals are gone and have reduced almost to a zero. At the same time, each and every person should remember that everything has a lacuna, and to cross over that lacuna planning is of the uppermost necessity. So, how could one execute the course of planning with valid tips for a trip to Europe?

Tips & Warnings

Let’s list some of the Europe travel tips for the sake of convenient planning.

Travel by air services and trains

Necessity Hotel Accommodation

Food Expenses

Sight-seeing planning

Travel by air services and trains:

While browsing across the Internet, you will come across numerous travel websites, that may help you know the exact fares of air services and of train services between your hotel accommodation and sight-seeing destinations. From thereon you can have clear picture not only of exact fares, but also of the distance between hotel accommodations and tour destinations, and the tour duration. All the more, you can fare ticket from those online platform by credit card or by using your debit card. Whatsoever your budget is, you should consider first the days for holidays you can devote to such a tour. You can think of them accordingly. No doubt air services will accelerate each tour duration. But at the same time you are to remember that air services, however convenient and comfortable, cost higher than the train services. Plan accordingly and fare as per your budget.

Necessity Hotel Accommodation:

Everyone goes on such a vacation for the purpose of relaxing and exerting tiredness. Accommodation, therefore, should be suitable in sync with purposes lest you return with another heavy heart. But remember that classy hotel accommodation in Europe costs expensively and causes heartburn. If you want to avoid such phenomena, then forget not to book hotel accommodations as per the permission of your purse. So, it is better to go by necessity than having to repent later for squandering money unscrupulously.

Food Expenses:

Europe has countless tourist spots. You may wish to cover all of them on a single European holiday. And be sure of the fact that you will not be able to complete touring all of them in one go. As the tour destinations are countless, so are the numbers of food items. Tourists, who are on a seemingly longer span of holiday, should go by those dishes which are affordable. It does not mean that you are to go on unsatisfied dishes and insatiable drinks. You can surely have them but prepare beforehand how to spend and how much prices you should plan budget for them. And all of these are available on those travel websites.

Sight-seeing planning:

Sight-seeing planning is very important. You may prepare your own itinerary on your own, or you may get ideas from the resources of the travel websites. Go as per your budget only, because there are hundreds of tour destinations, you may wish to visit.

Tour planning is very necessary. Otherwise, you may not fulfill your expectations about European holidays.
