Europe is where peoples of all nationalities converge, meet them in the streets of Venice or relax with them while listening to music and drinking one of the best tasting beers brewed in Germany. Immerse yourself in cultures upon cultures; go visit the endless offerings of museums, theaters, art exhibits in Europe specifically in Paris, London, Rome and Amsterdam.

There is enough to see and do in Europe all year round. One could take cruises, scenic boat tours on famous rivers, go biking in the country, shop till you drop at posh boutiques, go winery touring and sip all kinds of wine. The most perfect months to enjoy the south of Europe are May, June, September and October. July and August is the best time to visit Northern Europe, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. From November to March, it gets pretty cold in Europe but there are many travel bargains during this time and you could add snow excursions to the list of things to do.

When reaching the decision to travel to Europe, many things must be considered. And the first of them, according to the time you have to stay there, is to decide which regions you want to visit. Cultural background of any of the countries of Europe is strongly different from all the others, and in this article I will focus on what tourists can expect from the German speaking countries. This will include Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

Welcome to paradise is what I would say from the very beginning, specially when we look at the sceneries you can find when traveling the region of the Alps in Switzerland and also in Austria. These two countries have probably the most beautiful mountain sightseeing opportunities of the whole Europe, with huge snowed peaks, glaciers, skiing resorts, beautiful green valleys, lakes and lovely rivers and waterfalls. Is certainly the paradise for nature and for hiking lovers.

On the other hand, Germany is massively occupied by flat lands. An enormous territory in the central north of Europe, where even if some amazing natural spots can be found, the most important focus will be on cities. From enchanted looking castles built many centuries ago, to thousands of scars from the two recent World Wars. The recent story that divided Berlin in two parts is still visible there by the wall that used to separate them, now turned into a symbol of unification and peace.

Definitely what you can expect geographically is absolutely different in the zone, but what makes them to stay somehow together is the language, German. Switzerland, in any case, is divided in three zones, and even if more or less they know all the languages, in the north they speak German, in the South they choose Italian, and the Western parts will feel more comfortable with French.

A tour in this region, from my very personal point of view, should be done by train. There are of course very good plane services specially with Ryanair and German Wings that will bring you to nearly everywhere for incredibly low prices, but taking a rail ticket covering the three countries can be a really money-saving strategy.

Germany offers some incredible cities such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Köln and many others. Visiting the Scwarzwald can be a good experience in order to take contact with nature, and the famous thermal waters in Baden-Baden will make a good relaxing end of the trip.

Austria, full of natural highlights, also offers a city that has gained a name as The City of Music, Vienna. This comes from the high number of classical music composers that lived there composing their songs, and visiting the streets will still transmit the feeling that melodies roam in the air. Salzburg will be another important destination as well as Innsbruck and Linz.

Switzerland is probably the center of paradise, with places such as Grindelwald to be visited in order to get the best pictures of your trip. In any case, cities like Zurich, Interlaken and Bern are beautiful and in some way you will get the impression that even if many people live there, you are just walking a small town up in the mountains.

In general, the German attitude is more into the do-it-yourself mentality. They are mainly pretty proud of what they are, feel very comfortable with their culture, but sometimes tending a bit to be stubborn. In any case, they can be extremely friendly people and many times more helpful than other more outgoing cultures.

In the end, the combination between the recent history treasures and activities that you can find in Germany plus the outstanding quality of the natural environment offered by Austria and Switzerland together with its beautiful timeless cities is simply one of the best in Europe. Only you should remember to take a bit of German to prepare for the trip!

Set in the northern part of Europe, the country of Finland is bordered by Sweden, Norway, Russia, and the Gulf of Finland. It has an impressive 30,000 islands off its coast, and 188,000 island lakes, which makes this Nordic country renowned as one of Europe’s most striking. Still, regardless of such beauty, Finland’s past was tumultuous. At one time, it was caught in a tug-of-war between Sweden and Russia, and in fact, did not declare its independence until 1917.

A modern country today, Finland provides a high standard of living for its residents. Founded in 1550, Finland’s capital, Helsinki, has an impressive abundance of cosmopolitan comforts, not to mention a lively nightlife. Maybe you are interested in museums, or a summer cruise through the archipelago, or perhaps a Finnish sauna is your cup of tea. Regardless, you will find it all in Helsinki.

One of Helsinki’s most famous tourist attractions is Temppeliaukia Church. It was built by brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, and they carved it into solid rock. Another favorite stop is Soumenlinna, an 18th century Sea Fortress. It was originally constructed to secure Helsinki against Russial attacks. Built in the 1740′s, it is one of the largest in the world.

Finland is home to more museums than anywhere else in the world, and two of the finest are the Ateneum Art Museum, and the National Museum. If a castle with a moat strikes your fancy, be sure to visit Hame Castle. It was built in the 13th century. In the 1830′s it converted to a prison but it has been restored, and is now a museum.

Built in 1950, the Helsinki Zoo, Korkeasaari, is one of the oldest in the world, and a big attraction. Another place visitors love is the Olympic Stadium, built in 1940. Because of WWII, the games were cancelled, but Finland eventually hosted the 1952 Olympics

St. Olaf’s Castle, Olavinlinna, is one of Finland’s better known attractions. This 500-year-old castle is balanced on the edge of a tiny green island lake, and looks like it came right out of a fairytale. The King’s Road is worth seeing, as well. Winding along the southern coastline, this road once connected Sweden and Russia, and still has many intact taverns, castles, manor houses, cottages, and stone churches.

Turku was once the capital of Finland, and it is the oldest medieval town in the country. A mere 750 years old, it has a 13th century castle that now serves as a Viking museum. Finally, the Land of the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights is a must on any itinerary. Lapland is sparsely populated, and there is tranquil beauty in its forests, lakes, brooks, fells, and rapids. You will want to partake of the local salmon or reindeer, and do not forget to try some of the rare golden cloudberry wine. Lapland is also Saint Nick’s home, and you will definitely want to visit Santa’s theme park, Santapark!

When the decision to travel to Europe is reached, the problem is that Europe can’t be understood as one single country, as you could do with the United States. The cultural background that it exists in every country is absolutely different from the neighbors and has a completely different history. Most of times, it will also have a different language.

The way Europe has developed and this strong differences between regions makes it easier to take a decision on where you want to go. Taking the continent in some parts, the one I am going to explore in this article is Southern Europe

That could be the European Miami, and it consists mainly of Spain, Italy and Greece. Croatia recently has grown in tourism but it is still far on the way. The visitor that wants to go to Southern Europe in the summer is mainly a Sun & Beach tourist, somebody looking to get to the most beautiful beaches, hot waters, etc. Yes, these are the ones that come back home completely toasted because they forgot to put some sun cream on.

In any case, the southern region offers many more than sun and beach, even if publicity campaigns sometimes seem to show the opposite. They have a very strong past, as enormous civilizations colonized this lands in ancient periods. Italy has worldwide fame for its eternal architecture, Greece offers some of the most ancient structures, specially in its capital, but also around all the islands and in the central zone of the country, as Meteora Monasteries. Spain also has a very strong history of getting conquered and being reconquered again. This continuous movement has brought many cultures to step foot in there and this has left many visible forms of art. In the southern part of the country, the Arabic influence was very strong during one period, and some of the most beautiful buildings from this time are still standing there.

The three countries are also famous for the Mediterranean blood that runs through the veins of its individuals. Probably the actual demanding society and stress is not really helping this spirit to roam there forever, but still you will find a different character from the rest of Europe. Probably easier to make the first contact, but at same more difficult to make a real ever lasting friend. The spontaneous character is good for going out, but sometimes not for the longer relationship. Italians, after all, have won the prize for the most outgoing people in Europe.

When it comes to food, Mediterranean culture takes many good things from the sea and also has some of the most balanced diets you can ever find. Also, specially Spain and Italy, are famous for wine production.

You will not encounter the most clean cities of Europe in this region. The way of life tends to be a bit disrespectful for public spaces and nature, and this is a lesson that should be learned as soon as possible. Security level is the lowest in the developed part of Europe, but normally it will not consists of direct physical violence, but most of stealing problems due to certain levels of poverty. Put an eye on every bag you have, hide your money in proper places, and avoid at all costs going alone at night in solitary places.

Airline connections are very good specially for Spain and Italy, as they are strongly linked by Ryanair. If you want to travel to Greece, you can also find some higher fare flights from Italy, take a ferry from Italy to Greece, or simply make a connecting flight from Spain to London with Ryanair, and from there to Greece with EasyJet. The train service is not bad, but still it has a lot to improve in accessing certain spaces.

Finally, for the skiing lovers, remember that mainly in Spain and Italy you will have the opportunity of great skiing opportunities, Cruise lovers will get their best in Greece touring around the islands, or simply taking a Mediterranean cruise that will explore the three countries and even Turkey in the same package.

Whatever you are going to do, take it easy in the way we southern Europeans do. Things do not happen very quickly there, and every good thing needs its time to happen. Don’t worry about a bit of chaos, and simply enjoy what this ancient cultures have to offer. And remember about the sun cream!

Iceland is a mountainous island in the North Atlantic, located between Europe and North America. Although a bit austere, Iceland is a country of unreserved natural splendor.

The almost unreal beauty of lava eruptions, hot springs, geysers, fissures and glaciers make this land truly unique. Nordic and Celtic people settled Iceland in the 9th century, and in fact, Ing’fur Arnarson, a Norwegian Viking, founded the first settlement on the site known as present day Reykjavik, which is Iceland’s capital city.

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is one of the most famous attractions for tourists. Although it is thought these lights are only visible in winter, the truth is they can be seen all year long.

Another of Iceland’s attraction is the Midnight Sun. When this occurs in Scandinavia, during early summer months, the sun is visible at midnight. Its opposite is called the Polar Night, and occurs during the winter months.

At some point of their vacation, visitors usually find themselves in Reykjavik City. Iceland’s capital is thought to be one of the cleanest, greenest cities in the world. The nightlife in Reykjavik is vibrant, with an amazing variety of pubs, bars, cafes and dance halls.

In fact, live music is fast becoming a trademark of this city. You can find a concert on almost every night of the week. There is also a variety of local craft shops and Scandinavian designer stores in Reykjavik, and the Kringlan shopping mall is a popular draw for locals and tourists alike.

No trip to Iceland is complete unless you try one of the whale-watching tours. Surrounded by an ocean that provides a natural habitat for whales, dolphins and seals, Reykjavik is ideal for this activity. The tours will also take you past Puffin Island, as well.

Reykjavik’s landmark, the Perlan, or Pearl, is simply a must-do on any itinerary. Built in 1988 atop huge tanks, which store the natural hot water for heating the city, this rotating restaurant sits under a huge glass dome. The cuisine is top-notch, and the views breathtaking.

Is Viking history your thing? If so, check out some of Reykjavik’s museums. Also make sure to visit the Sun Voyager, which is a massive steel sculpture of a Viking ship. Created by Jon Gunnar Arnason, it can be found on Mt, Esja, and is best viewed at sunrise or sunset.

Another stop that is well worth making is the Restaurant Fjorugardurinn. Here you will experience a traditional Viking feast, amidst Viking decor. This unique eating establishment allows you to step back, and get a first-rate taste of Viking culture.

A very popular tourist attraction in Iceland is the Blue Lagoon. This outdoor, geothermal seawater pool is approximately 45-minutes, by car, from Reykjavik. The fluorescent blue pool, covered in steam, stays at about 104-degrees all year long.

Iceland offers tourists a wide variety of inimitable experiences, all of which both enchant and awe. Both strikingly and strangely severe, a trip to Iceland is simply unforgettable.

When it comes to traveling across Europe, many people assume that such an adventure is beyond their modest means. However, the legions of college students and others on shoestring budgets that descend on Europe every summer undermine this assumption. If these budget travelers can make Europe affordable, there is no reason you cannot as well.

Europe is actually quite a travel bargain in many ways, and if you choose your lodging, meals and transportation carefully a vacation in Europe can actually cost much less than a week in some of the most expensive cities in the United States.

One of the primary considerations of enjoying Europe on a budget is how to get around. When it comes to getting around, there are basically three choices – the bus, the train and air travel. Renting a car is often impractical in Europe, with the different types of roads, different laws and road signs in a myriad of unfamiliar languages.

Europe’s intercity bus lines offer passes, similar to rail passes, that can be purchased for various lengths of time and which provide for unlimited travel during those times. Single city to city bus tickets are often quite reasonable as well.

The main disadvantage of the bus system in Europe is that it is slow compared to rail travel and air travel. In addition, there is limited legroom on most buses, few opportunities to stand up and stretch, and some buses lack on board toilet facilities.

For many people, the extra convenience of the train more than justifies the difference in price, and train passes are still quite affordable for students and others on a budget. In addition to being faster, trains provide such amenities as toilets, and also sleeping quarters on overnight trains. Be aware, however, that there is often an extra charge for sleeping cars and other first class accommodations, even for rail pass holders.

One option that is overlooked by many budget travelers is that of city to city air travel. In Europe, however, air travel is actually quite a cost effective alternative to train and even bus travel. There are a number of excellent low cost air carriers all around Europe, and the fares they charge are often comparable to, and in some cases even lower than, train tickets between the same cities.

No matter how you get around, you will need a clean and safe place to stay once you reach your destination. There are a number of excellent low cost lodging options in Europe, ranging from hostels to hotels to bed and breakfasts. In most cases, hostels will be the least expensive option, but for groups of two, three or more it may be just as cheap, or even cheaper, to rent a small room at a budget hotel instead.

For those who arrive at their destination without reservations, there are hotel booking services available at most major train stations and airports. These booking services can usually find you a place to stay, even if the city is very crowded. For this service, they usually charge a small fee, either a set fee or a percentage of the room charge.

We are planning for our Europe trip. From the tips that we read, reservation for trains are required and strongly recommended if you are travelling via Eurorail during peak season. There’s also this peak season surcharge that we want to avoid. So when exactly is the non peak season to travel Europe? We had London, Parie, Swiss, Italy and Germany in mind.
